The Database Planning Project- Strategic Database Planning is initiated by senior management.
They allocate resources and identify personnel to participate in project. With their commission from management, team members have resources needed to perform a successful project. The project team must be extensive experience in information systems and other functional areas of company. A group of four full-time members, two from information organizations and two familiar with mainly other areas of company. All team members have be skilled and respected employees, because their work would have a main impact on the organization for many years. If they are not skilled in a methodology for carrying out the study, an outside consultant must be employed as advisor to train the team in suitable methodology. The project team leader must be a consultant but permanent employee and possibly head of database administration.
All through the project, team interacts with senior managers from all primary user areas. The senior end users identify principal processes, activities and units used in manual or automated information processing. The project team produces these data into a corporate information model integrated as part of comprehensive database plan. A report covering at least next five have to be delivered to senior management. This report will include analyses of following:
1.(). Information requirements of functional areas.
2.(). Information wants of different management levels.
3.(). Information requirements of geographical locations.
4.(). A model of in sequence needs.
5.(). Anticipated data volumes by geographical location projects for the time under study.
6.(). A preliminary estimate of expenses associated with system upgrades.
7.(). Recommendations for detailed development of new or improved databases with schedules.
