Carbohydrates should constitute nearly 60% to 70% of the total energy. Glucose is the primary calorie substrate in a parenteral, nutrition formulation. Parenteral nutrition should be initiated with a low dextrose infusion rate. Fats may provide 15% to 40% of the total calories depending on the underlying complications. Fat helps in preventing the deficiency in the presence of hyperglycemia. However, intravenous fat emulsions may create problems in patients having severe infection, liver or gall bladder disorders.
