Explain the Bolted Connections

a) Questions generally relate to the size of the bolt needed for a connection or

b) Number of bolts for a given loading and specified size

c) Shear capacity of bolts is given for single shear connections only.  Most common check is for shear in a bearing type connection.

d) The designation of X and N in the table for available bolt strength relates to the threads on the bolt being iN the shear plane (325-N) and not in the shear plane (325-X).

e) The bearing strength at a specific bolt hole typically does not govern a design but must be checked nonetheless. The edge distance from the bolt to the edge of the member in the direction of the applied force is crucial (Lc shown in supplied material).
