Explain Terbinafine
Terbinafine (Lamisil) - Terbinafine is a synthetic allylamine approved by the FDA for treatment of onychomycosis of the toenail or fingernail due to dermatophytes. It likely acts by inhibiting squalene epoxidase and blocking ergosterol synthesis. The most commonly reported adverse effects of oral terbinafine have been headache, gastrointestinal symptoms containing diarrhea, dyspepsia and abdominal pain, and occasionally a taste disturbance that may occur for weeks after the drug is stopped. Rash, pruritus and urticaria, usually mild and transient, have occurred. Toxic epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme have been reported. Increased aminotransferase activity and serious hepatic injury have occurred. Liver function should be assessed before initiation and occasionally during treatment with terbinafine. Anaphylaxis, pancytopenia and severe neutropenia have also been reported.
