"Durkheim saw a number of problems arising from specialization in industrial societies, but believed that the promise of the division of labour outweighed the problems. Durkheim also saw a fundamental difference between preindustrial and industrial societies. He believed that the specialized division of labour and the rapid expansion of industrial society contained threats to social solidarity. They tended to produce a situation of anomie".
