Sledge's book is full of episodes that indicate the psychological costs of intense battle, particularly on Peleliu when one marine went mad during the "Death Patrol," and later when the marines on the right flank of Sledge's company are hit point-blank by shell-fire from a camouflaged artillery piece (this is a very specific episode-make sure you have the right one).
