Shared Memory System / Tightly Coupled System

Shared memory multiprocessors have the subsequent features:

  • For real-time high-speed processing these systems are preferable because their throughput is high in comparison to loosely coupled systems.
  • Each processor communicates via a shared universal memory.

In tightly coupled system organization, multiple processors share a universal main memory, which can have several modules as displayed in detailed Figure. The processors have access to I/O devices too. The intercommunication between memory, processors, and other devices are applied via several interconnection networks. These are elucidated below.
