Explain Principle Osazone Test or Phenylhydrazine Reaction?
Phenylhydrazine reacts with carbonyl compounds in neutral or slightly acidic medium to give phenylhydrazones. These phenylhydrazones are soluble in warm water and condense with more of Phenylhydrazine molecules, to give phenyl osazones, which are insoluble compounds. Each sugar, in general, gives rise to an osazone of a characteristic crystalline structure which is typical for that sugar.
