Explain piezoelectricity, Electrical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Explain piezoelectricity.

Piezoelectricity: It gives us a means of converting electrical energy to mechanical energy and vice versa.

While an electric field is applied to a substance this becomes polarized, the electrons and nuclei suppose new geometric positions and mechanical dimensions of substance are changed. This phenomenon is termed as electrostriction. The reverse effect that is production of polarization with the application of mechanical stresses can take place only when the lattice has no centre of symmetry, such phenomenon is termed as piezoelectricity. Examples are: Rochelle salt and Quartz, Barium titanate.

Applications: Piezo electric materials function as a source of ultrasonic waves. At sea they may be utilized.
