Explain galactose metabolism, Biology

Assignment Help:

Galactose Metabolism

Galactose  goes to the liver via portal blood and is phosphorylated by galactokinase togalactose-  1  -phosphate (GIP) using ATP as  a phosphate donor as shown in Figure.  1  -phosphate  reacts with uridine diphosphate glucose  to  fom  uridine diphosphategalactose catalyzed  by galactose-I-phosphate uridyl transferuse. It is  then convertedto UDP-glucose catalyzed by  UDP-galactose  4-epimerase. Since this would be  thewell-fed state, the glucose would be incorporated into the glycogen chain through theaction of glycogen synthase.
