Explain ferrites and its uses in high frequency devices.
A group of magnetic alloys show the property of magnetisation that change, with percentage of various constituent atoms in the alloy. Illustration XOFe2O3 with X= Mn, Copper, Nickel, Zink, Mg, Cd or Fe++. The alloys are termed as ferrites. Manganese ferrite is a mixture of iron oxide and manganese oxide. Ferrites are extensively used in computers and in microwave equipment. Ferrites are advantageous at high frequencies due to low eddy current losses. The ferrites crystallise in what is termed as the spinel lattice. The resistivity of ferrites is higher than the ferromagnetic metals. Ferrites are brittle and hard materials that cannot be shaped trough ordinary machining processes. Ferrites are also used in recording tapes, transducer applications and compact aerials for focussing magnets of TV picture tubes and for radio sets.
