Even within the Roman Catholic Church, some members of the clergy challenged the authority of the Pope to set dogma and to supervise governance of the Church's buildings and lands. These challenges tended to come particularly from parts of Europe far from Rome, and in regions where the nobles had a great deal of authority relative to Kings.
