Explain circulatory support and types of shock?
CIRCULATORY SUPPORT
1) A "shock" state is characterised by hypoperfusion of tissue and cellular hypoxia. Circulatory support may be required to improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to vital organs. Broadly, there are four different types of shock states (Table 3).
Types of Shock
Hypovolemic
Loss of circulating volume e.g., blood loss, burns, sequestration of fluid into the gut as in bowel obstruction
Cardiogenic
Loss of cardiac "pump" function - following acute myocardial infarction,
Distributive
Abnormality of the peripheral circulation - may be abnormal vasodilatation as in septic shock, anaphylactic shock.
Obstructive
Mechanical impediment to blood flow from the heart - pulmonary embolism, pericardial tamponade.
