Explain CERCLA and SARA - Hazardous Waste Regulations

  • In 1980, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) was enacted to address those problems.
  • Commonly referred to as "Superfund"
  • The provisions were extended by the Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986
  • Established to give EPA authority and funds to clean up abandoned waste sites and respond to emergencies. This was greatly expanded by SARA.
