The systemic response affects the body in case of a severe infection or a serious injury. In this case, the WBC count increases. Body temperature rises causing fever. This may be brought about by toxins produced by pathogens and by a protein called endogenous pyrogen. When enough pyrogen reaches the brain, the body's thermostat is reset to higher temperature allowing the entire body temperature to rise.
