Explain bacterial vaginosis, Biology

Assignment Help:

Bacterial vaginosis

The role of sexual transmission is unclear in bacterial vaginosis, in which normal H2O2-producing Lactobacillus  species are replaced by overgrowth with  Gardnerell vaginalis, M. hominis, Mobiluncus and various anaerobes. Oral metron- idazole for 7 days is usually effective for treatment. Single-dose oral metronidazole has similar short-term efficacy, but is followed by a higher rate of relapse. Vaginal metronidazole, or oral or vaginal clindamycin, are also effective. With any regimen, recurrence is common; re-treatment with the same agent is often effective. Treatment of sex partners does not reduce the frequency of recurrence.
