Q. Explain about Neutral and Amphoteric oxides?
Neutral oxides have neither acidic nor basic properties and when dissolved in water, they give neutral solutions, e.g., CO, N20, etc.
Amphoteric oxides show both acidic and basic properties. They react with acids as well as with alkalis to give salt and water, e.g., Al203, ZnO, PbO, etc.
ZnO + 2HCl-----------------> ZnCl2+ H2O
ZnO + 2NaOH---------------> Na2ZnO2+ H2O
Al2O3+ 6HCl--------------> 2AlCl3+ 3H2O
Al2O3+ 2NaOH + 3H2O-----------> 2NaAl (OH)4
