Explain a review of Eating Disorder?
If you talk to a group of young boys and girls in an informal setting about their physical appearance, you will find that a majority of them are dissatisfied with their weights, as well as, their physical appearance. Boys in general want to be taller and want to have more muscular bodies which in fact, is a healthy trend. Most girls, on the other hand, view themselves as fat and want to look slimmer the so-called 'Aishwarya Rai Syndrome'. Sometimes, the obsession with body weight may be so severe that it leads to eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. These are psychiatric disorders, primarily affecting adolescent girls or young women, who had been previously healthy but start developing a paralyzing fear of becoming fat. In addition to these two disorders mentioned above, overlap syndromes also exist. Some emaciated patients who fulfil the criteria of true anorexia nervosa may show bulimic behaviour at some time. Similarly, subjects with bulimia often pass through a phase of anorexia. In our discussion, we will assume that the two disorders are different expression of a psychological obsession with body weight. Other eating disorders such as eating disorder not otherwise specified or binge eating disorder or childhood eating disorder and eating disorder in athletes have also been observed.
