A home-made wormery

A wooden box 30 cm by 30 cm by 15 cm fitted with a glass front is beneficial for studying the habits of earth-worms.

Fill the box nearly to the top with layers of (a) sand; (b) leaf mould; and (c) loam, padding down every layer before adding the next.

Place lettuce leaves, dead leaves, carrot, etc. on the surface soil, together with few worms.

Keep the contents damp and examine the behaviour of the worms.
