Examples of misused modifiers

A) A huge giant (Giants by definition are huge; the adjective adds nothing.)

B) very terrifying (Does "very" increase the impact of "terrifying"? Actually, because "terrifying" is such a strong word on its own, the modifier dilutes its power.)

C) Extraordinarily happy (If you need this adverb, perhaps the adjective itself isn't strong enough. Why not replace the whole phrase with the word "ecstatic"?)

Modifiers are meant to enhance your writing, but they are like adding spice to your meal too much and the taste of the original meal is lost. This is where strong verbs and nouns can strengthen your writing. Here are some examples further help with using modifiers:
