The cause of this neurological disorder can be mechanical or paralytic. The mechanical cause is primarily due to surgical resection or to alteration of one or more organs of swallowing owing to trauma, obstruction, cancer or other disease. The paralytic type results from a lesion in the cerebral cortex or cranial nerves of the brain stem in particular the medulla oblongata. The most common cause of the paralytic type is accident, head injury, brain diseases which may affect the nerves causing dysphagia.
