The estrous cycle of the rat is completed in four to five days although the timing of the cycle may be influenced by external factors such as light, temperature, nutritional status, and social relationships. In species having such short cycles, the ovaries contain follicles in various stages of formation, as well as corpora lutea of several past estrous cycles.
