Estimate the Weight of the Casting
A Yoke casting shown in Figure is to be produced by sand casting process. Estimate the weight of the casting if the density of the material is 7079 kg per meter cube.
Figure: Yoke Casting
Solution:
The casting can be broken down into standard volumetric shape primitives such as plate, cylinder, semicircular discs, etc. The dimensions of each constituent primitive are calculated from the drawing.
Table
The volume of each of the primitives is calculated using the following formulae : Volume of Cylinder = π/4 (Dia)2 × (Length)
Volume of Plate = Length × Width × Thickness
Volume of Semi Circular Disc = π/8 (Dia)2 × (Thickness) Volume of the Casting V = V1 + V2 + V3 + V4 - V5
V = 132532 + 162000 + 162000 + 63615 - 14136
= 506011 cc
Weight of the Casting = Volume × Density = 3.58 kg.
