Essay on birthing problems, English

Assignment Help:

The following quote is taken from "Walking with Cavemen".

Unlike monkeys and apes, whose infants are able to move around independently soon after they are born, humans give birth to very helpless young. This is because human babies develop very slowly in the womb and are born at a stage when they are still very undeveloped when compared to the ape species: the brain of the human newborn is only one quarter its full size whereas those of chimpanzee infants are already half grown at birth. Most of the human baby's development therefore takes place outside the womb, with the brain only reaching full size at around a year of age.

Your essay will address two reasons in our evolution as a species which explain why our children are born so helpless. Further, you will examine in some depth one of the clear consequences of this for present day mankind.

These consequences might include:

  • Birthing problems and some modern interventions to overcome these
  • The effect that long childcare times has had on the development of man's social structure
  • The ability to learn in young infants
  • Mankind's Fertility problems - an evolutionary dead-end
  • The ability to love (and hate) is part of our evolution

The genre is 'scientific' and informative. Your points should be made clearly with no irrelevancy or ambiguity. Your information should be supported by data presented in diagrams, tables or graphs. Your arguments should be logical and lead to your conclusions.

You will need to present any research which you have used (high-lighted) and a prepared Bibliography which will be attached to your essay. There is no need for in-text referencing.
