What is the epidemiological association between hemophilia and HIV infection?

As hemophilic patients need frequent transfusions of clotting factors (VIII or IX) they are more susceptible to contamination by infectious agents there in the blood from which the transfused elements come. In the past the blood banks did not usually perform HIV detection tests and many hemophilic patients have turn into infected with the virus.
