In time slicing, a task executes for a predefined period of time and then renters the pool of ready tasks. After this the scheduler determines which task should execute next on the basis of priority and other factors.

In pre-emptive scheduling, the highest priority task executes until it enters the waiting or dead states or a higher priority task comes into existence.
