With advances in food technology, foods for special use by diabetics are now available in the global market, they are emerging in India also. These foods have reduced calories or sugar content. Diet pepsi/cola, high fibre flour, breakfast cereals or even ice-cream is available in the Indian market currently.
A dieietic food product must contain less than 20 calories per serving and may be used as a 'free food' at meals or as snacks. In a day, not more than 60 calories should be obtained by dietetic foods. All diabetics should be counselled to read the food label carefully and then only select the food for consumption.
