Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG)
In SMBG, patients measure and monitor their blood sugar level by themselves and assess their condition and know the response to the treatment and life style modification.
SMBG can be useful in preventing hypoglycemia and adjusting medications (oral tablets) or insulin doses by the doctor. The frequency and timing of SMBG should be decided according to the need of patients. SMBG is recommended in patients receiving insulin to monitor for poor glycemic (sugar) control and also hypoglycemia. SMBG is recommended three or more times a day in patients who are on insulin therapy.
