Determine the Pathways of Weathering

Weathering and soil development proceed almost simultaneously in case of soft rocks, whereas in case of hard rocks weathering precedes soil development.  Two basic processes, mechanical and chemical, are involved in the changes indicated in Fig.  The former is often designated as  disintegration, the latter as  decomposition.  All these processes are discussed briefly as follows:
