Data is manipulated with the help of arithmetic instructions in digital computers. Data is manipulated to  produce the results  necessary  to  provide solution  for computation problems.  The Addition, multiplication, subtraction and division are four basic arithmetic operations. If we want then we can also derive other operations by using all these four operations.
