1) A network connecting an affiliated set of clients using standard Internet protocols, especially TCP/IP and HTTP.
2) An IP-based network of nodes behind a firewall, or behind several firewalls connected by secure, possibly virtual networks.
An Intranet is the use of Internet technologies within an organisation (or company) to achieve better results than the conventional means of data access and transfer. The Intranet helps in cutting costs and easy and fast accessibility of day-to-day information.
