THE ANALYTICAL ENGINE BY BABBAGE:

It was general use computing device that could be used for performing any types of mathematical operation automatically. It contains the following components:

  • THE STORE: It is a mechanical memory unit consisting of sets of counter wheels.
  • THE MILL: An arithmetic unit that is capable of performing the four fundamental arithmetic operations.
  • CARDS: CARDS are basically classified into two categories:

Operation Cards: Selects one of the four arithmetic operating by activating the mill to perform the selected function.

Variable Cards: It selects the memory locations to be used by mill for a particular operation (i.e. the source of operands and the destination of results).

  • OUTPUT: Could be directed either to a printer or a cardpunch device.
