The American revolution was a paradoxical event in that it was a conservative affair that had radical implications. What is meant by this statement? At base, what is being suggested is that those who favored a break from England sought to preserve the liberty that they had rather than acquire new liberties. But at the same time, the ideology of the American revolution surely did have radical implications centered on the goal of maximizing individual freedom. Do you agree or disagree with the thrust of the first sentence in this question? In the course of your easy, examine the sweep of American history from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century.
