The large quantity of carbon dioxide evolved during organic matter decomposition is thought to be important to the release of certain nutrients, particularly inorganic phosphorus. The carbon dioxide dissolves in water and forms carbonic acid and decreases soil pH. This effect would be of greater importance on neutral and alkaline soils.
