Q. Definition of Counselling?

Counselling has been defined as a process of helping/enabling a person/people solve certain interpersonal (not able to continue relationship), emotional (getting sad or worried) and decision-making (not able to decide about the problem or treatment) problems. A counsellor's role is to help clients help themselves.

Counselling can be defined as:

"A process of helping or enabling a person / persons to solve certain interpersonal, emotional problems and decision making by use of certain expertise."

Counselling is:
 
·  Specific to the needs, issues of each individual client.
·  An interactive, collaborative process.
·  Goal-directed.
·  Oriented towards developing self-responsibility and confidence in clients.
·  Sensitive to the client's beliefs, culture and values.
·  Collect information, reviewing options and developing action plan.
·  Strengthen coping skills.
·  Encourage social support.
 
Counselling is not:
 
·  Telling or directing.
·  Giving advice.
·  A casual conversation.
·  An interrogation.
·  A confession.
