Environmental and integrative biology cuts across a wide array of spatial scales, and theoretical approaches that take into account these widely varying spatial scales are necessary for an understanding of the biological questions. The use of reaction diffusion equations generally has proved to be an extraordinarily powerful tool for developing insights into spatial biological processes at scales ranging from the cellular level to the ecosystem level.
