Define the metabolism and respiration of cornea.
Metabolism and Respiration of Cornea
The cornea requires energy for the maintenance of its transparency. Energy in the form of ATPs is provided as a result of glucose metabolism within the layers of the cornea. Glucose reaches the cell by diffusion from aqueous humor. The corneal epithelial cell store high levels 01 glycogen. The glucose metabolism is mainly by EMP pathway. The remaining 30 per cent is by HMP pathway.
