Define the Concepts of Lipids?
You have studied the classification of lipids in your theory lesson. Lipids, you learnt, are classified as simple, compound or derived lipids on the basis of their chemical structure. Simple lipids are esters of fatty acids with various alcohols. They include neutral fats (which are esters of fatty acid with glycerol. Compound lipids are esters of fatty acids containing groups in addition to an alcohol and a fatty acid. Examples include phospholipids, glycolipids etc. Derived lipids are substances derived from above groups by hydrolysis. This group includes fatty acids, glycerol, steroids, sterols, fatty aldehydes and ketone bodies, vitamin A, D, E and K etc. Cholesterol belongs to the family of steroids.
