Define the brightness mode of display in brief.

B-Mode

Into the B-mode or Brightness mode of display, the time-of-flight (i.e., travel time) of the sound energy is exhibited along the vertical axis with zero of the time scale on the top left corner and linear location of the transducer is exhibited along the horizontal axis. That format reveals the depth of the discontinuity and its estimated linear dimensions into the scan direction. Therefore the B-scan presentation is as a profile (cross-sectional) view of the test specimen.

Brightness mode of display scan

The B-scan is typically generated by establishing a trigger gate onto the A-scan. When the signal intensity is great sufficient to trigger the gate, a point along with suitable brightness is produced onto the Bscan. The gate is triggered through the sound reflecting through the backwall of the specimen and through smaller reflections by the discontinuities into the material. Therefore each reflection is represented through a spot and the intensity or energy of the reflection into represented by the brightness of the spot. Into the B-scan image above, line A is generated as the transducer is scanned over the decreased thickness portion of the specimen. While the transducer moves to the right of this section, the backwall line BW is generated.

While the transducer is over flaws Band C, lines which are similar to the length of the flaws and at similar depths into the material are drawn on the B-scan. This should be noted that a restriction to this display technique is which discontinuities may be masked by larger reflections near the surface.
