Define Preterm and Low Birth Weight?

The foetal and neonatal health is mainly dependent on the birth weight and it has been well recognized that perinatal (from birth upto one year) morbidity and mortality is closely related to low birth weight. You may have come across the terms - premature, small for gestational age, intrauterine growth retardation etc. What do these terms mean? Let us get to know the definition of these terms.

'Low Birth Weight' is weight of infant less than 2500g at birth.

'Prenznturity' is defined when delivery is at less than 37 completed weeks.
