The Japanese criteria for functional foods include:

  • They are food (not capsules, pills/powder) on the basis of naturally occurring food components.
  • They can and should be consumed as part of normal daily diet.
  • They have a defined function on the human organism to:

- improve immune  function,

- prevent  specific disease,

- support  recovery  from  specific diseases,

- control physical and  psychic  complaints, and

- Slow down the ageing process.
