Define Ion exchange chromatography?

In this method a reversible exchange of ions is effected. Usually resins and ionic solutes are the two components involved in ion-exchange. Ion exchange resins are of two types cation and anion exchange resins. The acidic or cation exchange resins contain sulfonic acid groups (SO₃H), carboxylic groups (COOH) or phenol groups (OH).

Basic or anion exchange resins contain weakly basic amine groups (NH₂) or strongly basic quarternary ammonium groups (NH₄)⁺ OH^-. The surfaces of acid resins bind cations such as H, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, NH₄⁺. The basic or anion exchange resins carry positive charges on the surface and thus adsorb negative ions.
