Define Ion exchange chromatography?
In this method a reversible exchange of ions is effected. Usually resins and ionic solutes are the two components involved in ion-exchange. Ion exchange resins are of two types cation and anion exchange resins. The acidic or cation exchange resins contain sulfonic acid groups (SO3H), carboxylic groups (COOH) or phenol groups (OH).
Basic or anion exchange resins contain weakly basic amine groups (NH2) or strongly basic quarternary ammonium groups (NH4)+ OH-. The surfaces of acid resins bind cations such as H, Na+, Ca2+, NH4+. The basic or anion exchange resins carry positive charges on the surface and thus adsorb negative ions.
