CAD is used in design and development of new products in a diversity of applications both at commercial/industrial and on a home basis. Illustrations of typical CAD applications comprise:

- Architecture

- Aerospace

- Car/vehicle design

- Construction (for example roads, services, surveying, tunnels, bridges etc.)

- Consumer goods (e.g. kettles, toasters, etc.)

- Fashion design

- Factory layouts (e.g. ergonomics)

- Digital circuits

- garden/landscape gardening

- Interior designs (houses, offices etc.)

- Lighting systems (e.g. to get lighting effects at a concert)
