Evidence suggests that nearly one-third of preschool children in lower-income countries have stunted growth, and that a considerable proportion of this growth failure is likely attributable to zinc deficiency. Zinc is a cofactor for a large number of 200 metalloenzymes, which regulate several cellular functions of the body.
