Data Elements in Added Entries

When Unit Card System is followed, the added entries also carry the same data elements as in the main entry. But in addition, the added entry element is given at the top starting from the second indention. Added entry element is the access point under which the additional entry is provided to meet the exigency of the user approaching the document under that particular access point.

In the case of a brief version of an added entry when Unit Card System is not followed, the information given in it consists of

Call number,

Added entry element,

Main entry heading,

Title,

Edition, and

Year of Publication.

As can be seen, this is the minimum possible information about the document. In some practices, the data elements are reduced further by avoiding even the edition statement and the year of publication also.

The following illustration will make the point clear

For the same title given in section 6.2.3. a brief added entry for the subject approach will be:

86_adde entry.png

In a further simplification, it can also be given as

1501_added entry.png

Similarly, for the title approach an entry can be given in the form

1268_adde entry1.png

In the above illustration for title approach, the year of publication can be omitted. But, even in the briefer form of added entries, it is better to give edition statement and year of publication. These may help the user at the stage of looking at the added entry itself, how uptodated the book is. However, as the title and suject after document is some the title added entry may not be required.
