In patients who have not received prior antibiotics and who will ultimately have blood culture positive endocarditis, it is likely that 95 - 100 per cent of all cultures obtained will be positive and that one of the first two cultures will be positive in atleast 98 per cent of patients. Blood cultures are negative in 5 - 25 per cent of patients with IE diagnosed by strict diagnostic criteria.
