Nationalism began as an ally of movements for liberalism, constitutional republicanism and democracy. By the beginning of the 20th century it had become a major element in conservative thought, and finally, with the rise of Fascism and National Socialism it is employed for frightening ends. Beginning with the Revolutions of 1848 and 19th century discussion, all the way to National Socialism, discuss the history of nationalism in Europe.
