Assignment Help:

Q. Computation of Settlement?

The settlement  in any soil mass under an applied stress is given by

s = si + sc + ss

where,

S  =  total settlement,

Si =  immediate (or elastic) settlement,

Sc  =  primary consolidation settlement,  and

Ss  =  secondary  consideration'settlement.

In granular soils, elastic settlement is the predominant part. In inorganic  silts and clays, the primary consolidation settlement probably predominates. The secondary consolidation settlement forms the major part of the total settlement in highly organic soils and peats.
