Classification of Protozoa
Traditionally, protozoans have been classified as flagellates, amoebae, sporozoans and ciliates. We have retained this broad grouping for convenience so that you can have a basis for comparing the groups and have an idea about the diversity in protozoan. At the end of this section we give an outline of the classification put forth in 1980 by the Society of Proto zoologists. According to this classification seven phyla are recognized.
This is more realistic. Among other things it recognizes that flagellates. arid amoebae are more closely related to each other than to the other groups and that sporozoans include several unrelated forms.
