Chemical Properties of Maleic Acid and Fumaric Acid

Chemically, both of the acids provide the reactions of alkenes and dibasic acids apart from that the maleic acid on heating forms an anhydride when fumaric acid does not provide anhydride.

Both type succinic acid on reduction along with sodium amalgam. They go through addition reactions with bromine, hydrobromic acid, water, and so on. and form salts, esters and acid chlorides as usual. Along with alkaline KMnO4 solution, they get oxidised to tartaric acid.
